What is Trauma?

Trauma is subjective and a highly personal experience. It goes beyond adverse childhood experiences and can be anything that has overwhelmed your ability to cope.

It impacts the body, mind, spirit, and relationships.

Sometimes, trauma leaves lasting imprints on our lives like flashbacks, negative thoughts about ourselves, and nightmares, and our whole outlook on life and humanity can change because of it.

Chronic stress can also have a similar impact on the body and brain. Due to life being too short and having too many important things to tend to, it is vital to address both the trauma and the stress in our lives.

What is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a great approach to healing the brain and body from post-traumatic injury and stress. It integrates the healing of thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and body sensations related to stress and traumatic events. EMDR can provide relief from depression, anxiety, anger, stress, insomnia, and some forms of physical manifestations of discomfort or pain.

More technically, EMDR is an eight-phase treatment that uses eye movements, or other bilateral stimulation, during one part of the session. “EMDR therapy involves attention to three time periods: the past, present, and future. Focus is given to past disturbing memories and related events. Also, it is given to current situations that cause distress, and to developing the skills and attitudes needed for positive future actions.” – “What is EMDR?”, EMDR Instituite, Inc., https://www.emdr.com/what-is-emdr/

However, EMDR is not the only way to address stress and trauma.

TFCBT is another way to address trauma in individuals ages 3 to 18 years old. This tool addresses a young person’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and provides relief after a traumatic past.
